Abstract
Egg masses of Meloidogtne javanica were exposed to different concentrations (1.5;9.0; 54; and324 ppm) of ammonium ions and a high nitrate concentation (l,l 16 ppm) in a nutrient agar medium upon which excised tomato roots were growing. Stages of nematode development inside roots were observed at weekly interval for four weeks. Nematode development was inhibited or suppressed at high (54 and 324 ppm) but not at low (1.5 and 9 ppm) concentrations of ammonium nitate. Four weeks after inoculation, most nematode developed into adults at low ammonium concenhations with more females than males, but only a few developed into adults at high concentrations. At low ammoniunq there were more galls, and dry weight of the roots was higher compared with that at high ammonium levels. High potassium nitrate concentration did not affect nematode development.
