Abstract

This study entitled “ An Analysis of Codeswitching in Village Office Meetings at Sukarara Village Central Lombok” is aimed to find the types, factors, and reasons for codeswitching in the utterances in the village office meetings. The method used in this study is descriptive that is focused on analyzing and describing the type, factors and reasons for codeswitching. The data is taken from the conversation of village officers in their meetings that is collected by recording and note taking. Having been transcribed and translated, the data is marked the languages used in codeswitching by the speakers and analyzed the types, factors and reasons for codeswitching. The researcher found two types of codeswitching namely intrasentential and intersentential codeswitching. Beside that, there are two factors found constraining codeswitching such as topic and factors attaching the speaker both as individual and as member of variety of sub-groups. Moreover, there are four reasons for codeswitching such as (a) quoting somebody else, (b) talking about particular topic, (c) interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), and (d) expressing group identity.
