Abstract

The use of insulated pipes, is already widely employed in a variety of application purposes, in order to reduce the heat loss. One of the applications is the use of hot water, in housing projects, villas, hospital and apartments. Basically, the most importance of using insulation is to maintain the water temperature constantly during the delivery. In this study, PVC pipes have been selected as the insulation. The equipment used is a copper pipe with a length of 3000 mm and PVC pipe as the insulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the air gap and varying the diameter of the PVC pipe on the heat loss (qloss). This study was performed experimentally by varying the PVC pipe diameters ; ½ inch, 1 inch and 2 inch. Data analysis were performed based on the theory of heat transfer. The results show that, with a method anova, where α=0.05 obtained of the influence air gap against the heat loss (qloss) the value of Fhitung (0.265) and Ftabel (9.552), while of a variety of diameter against the heat loss (qloss) the value of Fhitung (0.240) and Ftabel (6.591) with result that Fhitung < Ftabel that is air gap and diameters variation don’t affect significantly with the heat loss (qloss), and in the air gap, thai is where the heat loss most in a copper without insulation of 20.69 W. while the heat loss most small shown by the insulation of the PVC 2 inch of 5.39 W.
