Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the students’difficulties in understanding narrative reading, a case study in the second year students of SMAN 1 Gunungsari in academic year 2014/2015. Specifically, this study seeks to identify the students difficulties in understanding simple narrative reading. In this study 40 students were taken as the samples out of 159 students’ population. In collecting the data, the writer employed objective test which consisted of 20 items of multiple choice test which were taken from 2 (two) simple narrative readings. This study can be regarded a descriptive quantitative research working on a single variable. After analysing and computing the collected data, it was identified that the highest score obtained by the students was 95, the lowest was 25, and students’ mean score was 70.5. Thus it can be classified as “B”. As the calculation points out there were 4 difficulties found by the students in simple narrative reading, they were; ability to understand the meaning of words and sentences, ability to connect idea in the passage, ability to perceive the details, and ability to concentrate during reading. However,60% of samples were able to reach the score of 65 as the minimum completion score. Therefore, most of students succeeded in objective multiple choice test and only less than half of students were incapable to provide relevant answer of multiple choice test which was based on simple narrative reading. Based on this figures, only 40% of students found difficulties in understanding narrative reading which can be classified as “C”.
