Abstract

This research entitled “The Strengths and the Weaknesses of English Textbook “When English Rings a Bell” For VII Grade Junior High School based on the English Curriculum 2013 an Academic Year 2015/2016. The objective of this research was to find out whether the content of the English textbook is appropriate with the curriculum 2013 and what are the strengths and the weaknesses of English textbook “When English Rings a Bell”. In this research, the writer used a descriptive qualitative research using documents as source of the data. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation, observation, and interview. The data were analyzed through identifying the contents of WERB textbook and English syllabus curriculum 2013 and describing their conformity, analyzing the strengths and the weaknesses of WERB textbook using the Garinger’s question checklist and Tomlinson’s criteria of good textbook, classifying them into the table, counting them and giving the percentage of the total number, and the last drawing the conclusion based on the result of analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the percentage of the content appropriacy between textbook and curriculum is 66.66%, and 51.72% of this textbook cover the competences suggested by English syllabus curriculum 2013. While the findings reveal that percentage of the strengths of the textbook are 59.375% and 40.625% of weaknesses from Garinger’s questions checklist and Tomlinson’s criteria of good textbook.
