Abstract

This thesis entitled: “ The use of Code Switching in Ordinary Conversation among English Students at FKIP Mataram University” aims at finding the types, factors, and reasons for code switching. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, that is, focuses on analyzing and describing the types, factors, and reasons for code switching. The data of this study were gathered through observation, recording, note taking and questionnaire then analyzed it through identification, classification, and description. Having been transcribed and translated, the data is marked based on code switching and analyzed the types, factors, and reasons for code switching. The researcher find out two types of code switching commonly appear namely intersentential and intrasentential code switching. Besides, based on questionnaire data analysis, there are four factors found that influence the use of code switching, such as the participant, the setting, the topic, and the function. Moreover, there are five reasons listed for code switching such as talking about a particular topic, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or connectors), repetition used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, and expressing group identity.
