Abstract

The researcher aims to: find out students’ difficulties in learning vocabulary in terms of meaning, spelling, and pronunciation checks and find out what factors caused difficulties faced by the ninth-grade students. This research is a survey research that used qualitative descriptive method. 32 students of SMPN 17 Mataram participated in this research. The researcher used a vocabulary test, a questionnaire, and an interview to collect the data. Based on the result of the percentage of students’ vocabulary test, it shows that there are twenty-eight students (87.5%) had difficulties in the pronunciation aspect. The results of the questionnaire also provide some additional information about the difficulties faced by the students. Based on the result of the research, the ninth-grade students still difficulties in learning vocabulary in terms of meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. The kinds of difficulties faced by students in learning vocabulary in terms of meaning, spelling, and pronunciation checks such as; (1) the difference between the word and the pronunciation. (2) the differences between Indonesian and English spelling. (3) the writing of the words or sound spelling mismatches and most often they find it difficult because of the difference between the word and the pronunciation (4) difficult in terms of synonyms, antonyms, and (5) similar words but different meaning. In addition, the other factors from the students, such as; being lazy to learn, English lessons being difficult, unfamiliar words, and lack of vocabulary, afraid for making mistake and less knowledge of vocabulary
