Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying the types, communicative functions and meaning of metaphor used by Bengkel Community in Menu-Meni dialect. In conducting this research, the researcher used qualitative research in the form of case study. The data of this study were gathered through observation, recording, note taking and questionnaire then analyzed it through identification, classification, and explanation. The study found that there are three metaphor used by Bengkel community, they are structural, orientational and ontological metaphor. From the three metaphors, ontologicalwas dominant. There is combination metaphor in one expression. The combinations involve the combination between ontological-structural, orientational-ontological, orientational-ontological-structural. It was also found that there are three communicative functions of those metaphors, they are inexpressibility, compactness and vividness hypothesis and the dominant function in using metaphor was compactness hypothesis that was because they tend to use metaphor to make their conversation or expression more compact and richer. The meaning conveyed by metaphor can be in two forms, i.e. denotative and connotative meanings. Denotative is meaning based on the word and connotative is meaning based on people’s opinions and experiences.
