Abstract

The objective of this research was to empirically test the relationship between grammatical errors and students’ anxiety in speaking the English language. Moreover, this research found grammatical feature dominantly causes language anxiety, the levels of anxiety among the fifth-semester students, and ways how students of the English Education Department overcome their anxiety in speaking English. There were 20 students in the fifth semester of the English Education Department at Mataram University participated in this research. This study uses mixed methods. The data were collected through speaking tests, interviews, and questionnaires. The questionnaire used was Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation in the SPSS program was used in finding the correlation. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The results of data analysis the correlation coefficient (r) ₌ -0.357 with the significance value (p) ₌ 0.122, it is larger than the social significance value which is 0.05. Moreover, a grammatical feature that dominantly causes language anxiety for students is tense. The level of anxiety among the fifth-semester students is at a high level. And there are some ways students overcome their anxiety in speaking English, such as being calm and confident, preparing and practicing, talking to themselves, do not overthink or being scared, hand gestures, breathing control, pretending to be unbothered, and mixing with Bahasa.
