Abstract

H-Bridge inverter is the most popular type of inverter which is suitable to use in many applications includes electricity generation with renewable energy resources. This paper discusses modification of the H-Bridge Inverter to improve its output voltage. Modification is carried out by adding some power electronic switches and diodes in the input side of H-bridge inverter to vary the DC voltage input of inverter. The simulation results show that the number of switches reduced significantly in comparison with the conventional cascaded H-bridge inverter. Further, it is found that the higher number of level of inverter output, the higher reduction of the used switches by the improved structure of inverter. For instance, at a-15 level inverter, only 11 switches are needed instead of 24 switches for conventional CHB inverter (more than 60% reduction). In line with the number of the voltage level, the quality of the output voltage is also improved. For the a-15 level of inverter, the proposed inverter structure results about 6.6% of Total Harmonics Distortion (THD). This indicates that the output voltage contains considerably small value of low order harmonics content.
