Abstract

This current research is about Speech Acts in terms of kinds, and functions of speech acts performed by Parris McKay, Emma McKay, and Nana Cora in Donna Hill‟s novel entitled What Mother Never Told Me. There are two main theories of speech acts which are used to analyze the data; Austin‟s theory and Searle‟s theory of speech acts. The kinds of speech acts are; locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, perlocutionary acts. The functions of speech acts are; representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. A descriptive qualitative method was used because the data being analyzed is descriptive data. Content analysis method is used due to get description of the research phenomena which in the forms of words, clauses, phrases, and sentences. There are fifteen fragments being analyzed. As the result, based on the classification of speech acts, it shows that the most dominantly performed is locutionary acts uttered102 times, and then it‟s followed by illocutionary 102 times as well and the lowest frequency appeared is perlocutionary acts 98 times. And the total frequency count of the kinds of speech acts is 202 times. And in terms of the functions of speech acts; representative has the highest frequency performed 68 times. It is found that representative is the highest frequency performed by the speakers as asserting, explaining, agreeing, suggesting, asking, reporting, informing, demanding, telling, claiming, affirming, denying, disbelieving, concluding, calling, answering, introducing, greeting, and clarifying.
