Abstract

Listening has been one of neglected skills in language teaching and learning among high school leaners in SMAN 10 Mataram. There were many various cause that many students complained during the comprehending stage of the listening texts. This study was aimed find out the difficulties that mostly faced by students in listening at SMAN Mataram. Using sample random sampling, tenth grade students out of 108 students were selected as the respondents. They were test, questionnaire and interviewed to collect the data for this descriptive-qualitative study, result was analyzed based on determine research questions. Test was done analyze the students answer sheet and analyzed the students wrong answer, questionnaire was done to identifying students listening difficulties analyzed the students questionnaire then analyzed students difficulties, and interview was done by asking five prepared questions were also asked to clarify the answer given. Based on the result of this study, the students of SMAN 10 Mataram had the most students achieved a good level from test result, then from questionnaire and interviewed results respondents admitted that listening was frequently neglected in the school, it was taught twice or three times in one semester. Also, the unavailability of adequate facilities in the school added their adversity. The more problem faced by students in SMAN 10 Mataram were limited vocabulary, atmosphere in the classroom, lack of media and quality of record material. Students sometimes encounter unfamiliar words which caused them stop and think about the meaning of those words and they missed the next part of the speech. In the same way, such as the accent, noise, rate of delivery, pronunciation, and intonation students difficulties while doing listening exercise.
