Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills that the students should master. Many students still find writing as a challenging skill. This research aimed to discover the extent which students are able to write the introductory part of the thesis report and the challenges in outlining, drafting, and developing the introductory part of the thesis report. Qualitative data were employed in this research, with document analysis and interview transcripts as the instruments. There were 20 students in English Education Department, especially in TP-3 Class Academic Year 2017/2018 at the University of Mataram, as the subject of this research. The result of this research identified the student’s ability in conducting the introductory part, especially the background of the study section, in the thesis report as ‘Fair’. The aspects students find difficult are Organization, Grammar, and Mechanics. The result of the interview transcript also supports students’ challenges in outlining, drafting, and developing the introductory part of the thesis report, which is related to lexical difficulties, grammatical errors, and lack of planning. It indicated that most students have various problems with thesis reports.
