Abstract

This study aimed to find out who tended to be more reticent between male and female students and to investigate the factors which influenced their reticence in speaking classes. This qualitative study was conducted at English Departement Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Mataram University. Reticence scale was used to determine the subject of the study, to know the students‟ reticence level and to figure out which one has higher reticence level between male and female students. Nine male students who had reticence level at range 65 to 83 and eleven female students who had reticence level at range 63 to 88 were given questionnaire. The results of data analysis revealed that female students tended to be more reticent than males, and factors influencing students‟ reticence in speaking class are students‟ personality, students‟ knowledge, teacher, classmates, classroom atmosphere, opportunity to speak, task type, topic, and culture. Also, the most provoking factors in making students reticent for female was students personality which was about 72% while classroom atmosphere was the most dominant factors affecting students reticence for male which was about 88%.
