Abstract

Background: Obstructive sleep apneu (OSA) is the most prevalence sleepdisordered breathing. OSA is independently associated with the higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure and coronary artery disease as well as prediabetes and diabetes mellitus. The association between risk of OSA assessed by STOP-Bang Questionnaire and the risk of cardiovascular diseases was never been investigated yet in Indonesia. Methods: This was an analytic descriptive study using cross-sectional design involving 62 subjects living in Mataram aged 40-74 years old. The risk of OSA of each subject was assessed by calculating the total score of STOP-Bang Questionnaire. The total score of ≥3 was considered as high risk OSA. The assessment of the risk of cardiovascular diseases of each subject was measured by using Framingham score which was then converted into percentage value, estimating the probability of having cardiovascular diseases in the next 10 years. Results: From total 62 subjects, high risk OSA was present in 38,71%. The risk of cardiovascular diseases according Framingham risk score was significantly higher in subjects with high risk OSA (p=0,007). In this group, there were significantly higher proportion of male gender (p=0,001), wider neck circumference (p=0,001), wider waist circumference (p=0,036), more hypertension (p=0,001), and higher fasting blood glucose(p=0,025). Conclusion: The proportion of subjects with high risk OSA was high in population as screened by STOP-Bang Questionnaire. The risk of cardiovascular diseases was significantly higher in subjects with high risk OSA.
