Abstract

The need for proficiency in English in college students is very important to improve competence in the teaching and learning process and provisions in dealing with the world of work after graduation. To achieve the effectiveness of student needs, it is necessary to conduct research on the needs of students in learning English in the department of Sports and Health Education. This research is quantitative descriptive and implemented in the second semester of the Department of Sports and Health Education at the Mandalika University of Education. The total subject of The study consisted of 49 students. The study was designed in form of a quantitative descriptive study. The data were collected by interviewing and questionnaire. The results showed that In terms of necessities, students learn English because they want to be equipped with enough knowledge for their future work. They want to improve their speaking skills because it will be very useful to get a job. In terms of English proficiency level, this indicates that most students are at the beginner level, where they cannot have conversations. In case of wants, Students want to be able to learn in small groups and using games is one of the preferred teaching methods among students. Because when they learn that method they will not get bored quickly and at the same time increase students' learning motivation. In fact, learning through games is the learning of combined methods. This will relax students in understanding the material. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the needs of students in learning English are aimed at their future fields of work by having good speaking skills and using group and game learning methods because many students are still beginners
