Abstract

Translation of literary text is not simply transferring message from one language to another. It requires the translator‘s ability in transferring particular linguistic styles and features of texts as accurately as possible. Translation of proper name (PN) is categorized as one of the problem-restricted theory in translation study. The objectives of this study are to reveal the category of PN based on Valentine‘s theory, to identify the translation procedures based on Newmark‘s theory, and to determine the translation ideology based on Venuti‘s theory in the IndonesianEnglish translation of the novel Laskar Pelangi, the Rainbow Troops. The method used in this study is a mixed method, a combination of qualitative and quantitative method. In qualitative study, Descriptive Translation Study (DTS) or particularly product-oriented DTS is applied. the quantitative method is used to determine the category of PN, procedures, and ideology that dominate. The data is collected using document procedure and then analyzed using thematic analysis. The result of the study shows that there are 334 proper name that consist of 13 categories and 227 of them have the equivalent translation in the novel the Rainbow Troops. The translator used 12 procedures to translate the novel. Those procedures include addition 2 PN (1%), cultural equivalent PN 6 (3%), expansion 9 PN (4%), reduction 12 PN (6%), functional equivalent 18 (8%), recognized translation 14 PN (6%), through translation 62 PN (27%), transference 78 PN (34%), transposition 10 PN (4%), naturalization 13 PN (6%), modulation 1 PN (0.4%), and compensation 2 PN (1%). Transference and through procedure, categorized as SL emphasis based on Newmark‘s V Diagram, dominate and therefore the basic orientation of the translation tends to SL. Based on Venuti‘s theory, such SL emphasis means that the foreignization is dominantly used over domestication ideology
