Abstract

Output voltage quality of inverters is depended on the applied modulation techniques. The 2-level 3-phase inverter uses 6 electronics switches. Modulation techniques relates with the methods that used to control the switches. This research compares the performance of the 2- level 3-phase using 180° conduction method, Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM), and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM). The modulations methods are verified using Matlab/Simulink and experiment. Simulation and experiment result shows that the 180° conduction method produces highest output voltage compared with the SPWM and SVPWM methods. By using 12 Volt of DC-link voltage, the 180° conduction method produces 5,23 Volt (rms) at frequency of 50 Hz, while the SPWM and SVPWM produce 3,28 Volt (rms) and 4,12 Volt (rms). Furthermore, the 180° conduction method also generates output voltages with the lowest Total harmonics Distortion (THD) compared with SPWM and SVPWM. THD of the output voltage using 180° conduction method is 29% on 50 Hz fundamental frequency while for SPWM and SVPWM are 49,6% and 35,7% respectively. However, one of the crucial disadvantage of the 180 conduction method is the output voltages contain high value of non triplen low order harmonics, particularly the harmonics of the 5 th, 7th , 11th and so on.
