Abstract

This study was a case study about politeness among family members in ordinary conversations at Rebile community. In family members’ conversations, there were unpredictable types of politeness used. Thus, the study purposed to discover types of politeness used along with reasons underlying the use of such types of politeness. The study took four weeks and the data were gathered from 20 participants, consisting of fourteen menak and six non-menak people. In menak participants, four of them hold status hajj, while in non-menak, two of them are hajj. Then, the age of the participants was from 18 up to 85, and they had different educational backgrounds. The study found that some types of politeness were used among family members, such as alus style, jamaq style, and address forms. In addition, there were some reasons underlying the use of politeness, such as persuasion, pedagogy, social status and power, level of age, and familiarity/closeness. Then, the study recommended that other researchers conduct research at Rebile community, among family members particularly and in broader field of study to increase and explore rich socio-cultural attributes in Sasak language.
