Abstract

Poverty remains as a strategic issue in NTB in the 20 years. Data shows that the poverty rate in NTB in 2005 reached 25.92% of the population, and in 2009 the number of poor people was recorded at 1,014,745 or around 21.88% of the population, in 2013 the proportion of poor people reached around 20.08 %, and in 2021 numbers poverty decreased to about 13.8%. These facts mean that various poverty alleviation programs that had been implemented for the last 20 years had reduced the poverty level. On the basis of these facts, a research on the roles groups as a social capital in poverty alleviation and rural development had been conducted to understand (1) the capacity and role of farmer groups in the management of livestock and business , which includes aspects of input, production and post-harvest (marketing and processing). (2) knowledge, perceptions, attitudes, motivation, skills, and management practices of livestock management by the members of the groups. (3) the vision of the group and members on the management of the livestock business. (4) the gap (distortion) and the factors that associated with the gap between the current condition and the ideal condition in the institutional management of breeders and the management of livestock business. Modified action -research method was used for the study, combining quantitative and qualitative research methods, and data collection was conducted through survey, in-depth interview, and focus group discussion (FGD), involving 7 (seven) cattle farmer groups in the four districts of Lombok Island. The results of this study showed that cattle farmer groups still provide a limited role to cattle farmers, namely providing security for cattle managed by farmers. Farmers are not yet oriented towards managing commercial cattle businesses through meat and cowhide processing activities, including solid and liquid waste processing and business. At this stage, few farmers had involved in compost and liquid fertilizer production and used them for their own needs. Facilitating farmer institutions or organizations to grow and develop into commercial Farmer Owned Enterprises (BUMP) is the next challenge.
