Abstract

This thesis entitled An Analysis of Social Impact towards Mathilde’s Character Development in Guy De Maupassant’s short story “The Diamond Necklace” is aimed to analyze the social background of the main character and how the social condition influences the development of the main character. The data of this thesis were gathered through library and internet research.Quotation taken from the conversation, statement and actions of the main character in the short story become the primary data of this thesis. The method used in analyzing the data in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The results gain from this study are (1) The characterization of Mathilde are materialistic, greedy, never grateful, stubborn, selfish and hard working. (2) The social conflicts which are faced by Mathilde Loisel (3) The influence of the social elements towards the character developments of the main character. The conclusion of this thesis is the problems related to the social condition of Mathilde influenced her character development. Mathilde’s intention to be achieve in higher status society made her live in her dream.
