Abstract
Land characteristics are the properties of identifiers or attributes that are complex from a piece of land, where the soil characteristics can affect the suitability of land for a specific use. Each has a diversity of land quality that affect the suitability for a specific use and usually consists of one or more characteristics of the land. Given the importance of these problems it has conducted research on the characterization of Watermelon Cultivation in District Kopang Central Lombok. This study aims to determine the characteristics of the land for planting watermelon in District Kopang Central Lombok. The method used in this research is descriptive method is a method that is aimed at solving the existing problems by collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. Survey technique is a technique used in this study, which includes a series of activities prasurvei and survey activities in the field and laboratory. Prasurvei at the stage of data collection (administrative maps, soil maps, land use maps and maps of slope), map-making work, the determination of the point of observation and preparation tools for field surveys. Map- making work is done by merging the data map (overlay), which then produced 5 unit of land (SLH). Furthermore, the determination of the observation point at random or random. At this stage of the survey carried out observations of soil properties according to a predetermined sample point in the map work. As if each soil sample point is almost the same (homogeneous) then, be making the mini-pit. After making a mini-pit sampling carried topsoil to a depth of 0-20 cm and the bottom layer at 20-50 cm depth. Then those lands combined (composite) for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Soil analysis carried out in the Laboratory of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mataram which include physical parameters: Soil texture is measured by the pipette method. Chemical parameters include: (1) the soil pH is measured by a pH meter, (2) Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) method extracts ammonium acetate pH 7, (3) C-organic methods Walky and Black, (4) N-total method Kjedahl , (5) K2O available methods extract ammonium acetate pH 7, (6) Mg- available methods pekstrak Morgan-Venemas's.
