Abstract
This research aims to find out how personification in the source text is preedited by students before using Google Translate to translate the text. This is qualitative research. The research was held in a translation class in academic year 2022/2023 at University of Mataram and the class consists of 22 students. There are three methods to collect the data such as observation, giving a task or assignment, and CMC. Furthermore, the data is analyzed in three stages such as data reduction, data display and explanation, and conclusion. The researcher found out that students can conduct pre-editing of personification in the source text by adding words into the source text and changing some words. Furthermore, it was found that some students conducted pre-editing with a total score of 41 and some students who did not conduct pre-editing of figurative language with a total score of 70. In terms of naturalness, the changes students make improve the quality of the translation from the total score of 16 to 19. It can be concluded that students can conduct pre-editing of personification in the source text by adding words into the source text and changing some words. However, the meaning is still the same as before the text is edited. Furthermore, most students in the class do not conduct preediting because they thought figurative words are common. Therefore, they do not conduct pre-editing of those words because they already know the meaning of those words.
