Abstract
This research focused on the use of swear words by male and female users on three social media platforms; Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The objectives of this study are; to classified the types of swear words used by male and female users on the social media platforms mentioned according to its references, to discover the differences of swear words used by male and female users; and to discover the reasons and functions on why swear words are used by male and female users. Descriptive qualitative method was used in conducting this research. All the threads on Twitter and comments on Instagram and Facebook are the source of data that taken from Deember 2022 to April 2023. The types of swear words according to its reference that proposed by Wijana and Rohmadi was used to classified the types used in the platforms. As for the functions of swear words, this research used Pinker‟s (2007) classification. There were 136 of comments and threads from four social media platforms that consist of 7 types of swear words; conditions, profession, kinship, part of body, animal terms, sexual activity, and objects with 3 functions; abusive, idiomatic and dysphemistic swearing used by male and female users. It is found that swear words are used frequently by both gender with different variations on each type. The difference of swear words used by male and female users are only found on the types and the variation on each type and its level of harshness of the swear words used.
