Abstract
Teachers with sound pedagogical competence is a key to successful curriculum implementation. This study is intended to identify and describe teachers’ pedagogical competence in relation to Merdeka Belajar Curriculum. This study is qualitative in nature using interviews and observation as the method of data collection. Content analysis was used as the data analysis. Three teachers from three government junior high schools in Praya were involved to be the study participants. The participants were selected purposively. The study found that only one out of two teachers showed pedagogical competence sufficient for implementing the Indonesian new curriculum. This study showed in implementing the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum, the teachers faced some challenges in the teaching-learning process, such as: Unpreparedness in teaching, Difficulties in emancipating in students learning, Lack of teachers understanding of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum, Difficulties in managing students’ active learning, and Lack of interactive media for English Classes. To deal with the problems at hand, several strategies to help teachers that can be applied to develop teachers' pedagogical competence in implementing the Merdeka Learning Curriculum; there were: Studying in the learning community, Learning through the Merdeka Mengajar platform, Learning the Merdeka Belajar curriculum by participating in webinar series, and Practical training and working with development partners to implement the Merdeka Belajar curriculum.
