Abstract

This research aimed to figure out the strategies used by English teachers in teaching reading, the reason of English teachers used the strategies and students response to the teachers strategies. This research was designed as qualitative case study. The study involved two English teachers and two classes of students. The data were collected by using classroom observations to directly see the teaching process in the classroom. Interview with the teacher was also employed to obtain information on their reasons of implementing the strategies. The instruments of the research were classroom observation checklist and interview guide. The instruments were used to figure out the strategies used and the reason of English teacher use the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The result of the data were analyzed and broken down into three stages; they were data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The study found that there were various strategies used by the English teacher in teaching reading comprehension skills. The strategies were encouraging the use of dictionaries, activating students’ prior knowledge, brainstorming, questioning, and reviewing strategy, game strategy and scaffolding. The teacher reasons for using the strategies were the strategies are effective and adapted to the conditions of students, the strategies can motivate the students, the teacher wants to make the reading a fun activity for students and the teacher wants to make the students more active in the learning activity. The reasons of English teachers’ use the strategies are based on the condition in their classroom and students their students’ need and language ability. In observation found the students responses to the teachers’ strategies were positive the strategy applied by the teacher can motivate the students to learn, even though there is also a strategy that get the negative response from the students, but most of the strategies applied by the teacher is effective to make the students participated in learning activities.
