Abstract

This study examines how Facebook memes are used to index religious identities through the lens of semiotic theory. It employs qualitative content analysis to interpret the signs and symbols in 62 Islamic religious memes gathered from Facebook groups. Charles Sanders Peirce's conceptual framework of icon, index, and symbol guides the semiotic analysis. The findings reveal that religious identities are indexed through four meaning categories: symbolic, indexical, contextual, and intertextual. Symbolic meanings arise from associating religious concepts with icons like images and practices. Indexical meanings are created by direct contextual connections between signs like religious terminology and objects like rituals. Contextual meanings rely on shared cultural knowledge and experiences within religious groups. Intertextual meanings are constructed by relating religious themes to popular culture references. The semiotic resources within multimodal memes allow users to signal religious affiliation, highlight shared customs, and assert moral perspectives. This research contributes new insights into how online communities creatively leverage memes for identity construction through semiotic modes. It demonstrates memes’ emerging role in digital discourses on religion and culture. Further studies can build on this methodological approach to explore identity negotiation and meaning-making within diverse virtual spaces.
