Abstract

As the published English textbook in Indonesia needs to follow the outlined guidelines directed by the government according to the implemented curriculum that demands the inclusion of Indonesian cultures and the development of learners’ characters, this study is intended to scrutinize: what elements of Indonesian cultures are represented in the government prescribed English textbooks; how these cultures are represented; and what cultural values are represented in the cultures toward developing learners’ characters. This study is qualitative in nature as it is a descriptive content analysis. Two English textbooks (Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress and Bahasa Inggris: English for Change) for senior high school were selected for the subjects of study. The data were collected from the two textbooks using documentation method. The analysis of data used Yuen’s (2011) four elements of culture to classify the represented elements of Indonesian cultures in the textbooks. Drawing from Hall’s (1997) concept of representation, this study used Adaskou’s (1990) modes of cultural information to see how Indonesian cultures are represented, and the values in three character profiles of Pancasila learner were used to examine what values are represented through the cultures. This study found that product is the dominant element of Indonesian cultures followed by the elements of person, practice and perspective respectively. These elements of Indonesian cultures are dominantly represented through visual illustration followed by lexis, dialogue, and descriptive text respectively. These Indonesian cultures represent the values in the three character profiles of Pancasila learner, but the proportion varies from value to value. The textbooks cover both covert and overt notion of culture through elements of Indonesian cultures and their values which indicates that from cultural point of view the two textbooks are good as they sufficiently include Indonesian cultures and values as it is outlined in the curriculum to meet the nationally specified learning outcomes of developing learners’ cultural understanding and characters.
