Abstract

The study aims to analyse women's power in Sasak marriage and its implications for the relationship between men and women. It uses semiotic theory and Michele Foucault's theory to expose stereotypes and help future researchers explore women's positions and power dynamics in the Sasak community. The research uses Library and Field Research, participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary data from Lombok Island. Sasak women hold significant power in their marriages, as they have a strategic position and role in determining decisions. The final decision is ultimately held by the bride and her family, impacting the relationship between men and women. The stages of Sasak marriage, particularly through melaik, demonstrate the power of women in Sasak custom. The midang process, the initial stage in finding a mate, is followed by melaik, and subsequent stages where the bride and her family are dominant determinants of whether the marriage goes through. The research does not prove women are more powerful than men, but it highlights the power women have over themselves, driving other parties to take action to determine the continuation of the marriage. Men bear the responsibility of finding a mate, so they must compete in the midang process. The stages of Sasak marriage have implications for the relationship between men and women, as men must be wiser when approaching women and ensure their potential to be chosen as a future husband.
