Abstract

Composites are an alternative to produce materials with better mechanical properties than other materials. Epoxy thermosets belong to a group of polymers that can be used as adhesive coating materials, and as a matrix (binder) in composite materials. To increase the strength properties, fillers are added. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of filler volume fraction on the mechanical properties of bending and impact by using pineapple leaf fibers and sea shells as fillers. The materials for this research were filler for clam shells and pineapple leaf fibers with epoxy resin and epoxy hardener matrices. The heavy fraction of filler used (0%, 5% and 10%) while the heavy fraction of fiber (40% and 50%) is in the composite. The tests carried out are bending tests referring to ASTM D790 and impact ASTM D256. Parameters measured were bending strength, modulus of elasticity, and impact strength. The results showed that the lowest bending strength value was 101.5230 MPa for the fiber weight fraction of 40% and 0% filler, and the highest bending strength value was 149.4394MPa for the 50% fiber weight fraction and 0% filler. The lowest modulus of elasticity was 3332.1 Mpa for the 40% fiber weight fraction with 0% filler and the highest elastic modulus value was 7377 Mpa for the 50% fiber weight fraction and 0% filler. The lowest impact strength value was in the 40% fiber weight fraction with 0% filler of 0.014 J/mm2 , and the highest impact strength value was in the 50% fiber weight fraction and 0% filler of 0.043 J/mm2
