Abstract

This research aims at recognizing: 1. The practice of coconut farming comprising production subsystem, crop processing and marketing in North Lombok District, particularly in Sigar Penjalin Vilage and Sokong Village, Tanjung sub-District, 2. Financial expediency of coconut farming in both villages, 3. Contribution of coconut trees from both villages in fulfilling woods needs for lumber wood at the level of Sub-Distric, Distric and Province. The study sit was in Sigar Penjalin Village and Sokong Village, Tanjung sub-District, North Lombok. The study site was determined by using multy stage sampling. The population in both villages were 1,573 people. The sample was determined by using slovin formula with 15% of error level. The data were gathered through structured- interview using questionnaire and observation. The finding of the study shows that the practice of coconut farming in Sigar Penjalin Village and Sokong Village is done traditionally. It can be seen from its production subsystem, crop processing and marketing which are conducted without calculation. Related to the analysis of farming expediency in Sigar Penjalin Village and Sokong Village, it can be stated that the farming is proper and can hold out up to 45% of interest bank rate increase with 1 ha farming area for 30 years of production period. Through the interview, the potential of coconut trees in both villages can fulfill 13,8% of woods need. Meanwhile derived from the observation, the potential is 7,6% to fulfiil the woods need in West Nusa Tenggara Province.
