Abstract

Now days, English becomes one of compulsory subjects at all of schools in Indonesia. Supposedly, English classroom uses English as instruction. However, as multilingual society sometimes teacher and students find the situation that makes them speak Indonesian. As define by many experts, the phenomenon named codeswitching. The code-switching phenomenon has become very handy for teacher with students from diverse cultures. This research is a part of the sociolinguistic studies that emphasizes on code-switching in communication, especially in teaching and learning activity in the classroom. Beside investigates the form and functions of code-switching, the writer also investigates the reason of code switching used by teacher in the classroom. The research employed a qualitative approach. The data is taken from youtube videos of English teaching and learning process. Base on the reasearch finding, all form of code-switching are used in the teaching and learning process. While for the for the functions of code-switching the researcher only six out of seven functions from teacher and students` utterances. The study also found some reasons of using code-switching in English classroom there are speaker, speech partner, topic of conversation, changing from formal into informal situation, and language function.
