Abstract

This study is an analysis of romantic expressions in Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Notebook and its translation. The aims of the research are (1) To analyze the types of romantic expressions appeared in Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Notebook, and (2) To analyze the translation technique used by the translator to translate romantic expressions. The main data of the research are English version of The Notebook novel by Nicholas Sparks and its Indonesian version, Buku Harian by Kathleen SW. The data were transcribed into extracts and analyzed using theory of love languages and translation techniques. This research used descriptive qualitative type in investigating the problem. To collect the data that are needed the researcher use documentation method. The findings of this research revealed that there are five types of romantic expressions and twelve of eighteen techniques used by the translator. From those five types of romantic expressions, there are 24 expressions that represent words of affirmation, 10 expressions that represent both acts of service and physical touch, 6 expressions that represent quality time and 3 expressions that represent receiving gift. Meanwhile, from those twelve techniques used there are 14 times used for established equivalent; 7 times used for linguistic amplification; 6 times used for variation; 5 times used for amplification; 4 times used for both literal translation and modulation; 3 times used for adaptation, generalization and linguistic compression; lastly, 1 time used for both particularization and pure borrowing. From the findings, it stated that words of affirmation are the most types of romantic expressions appeared and receiving gift are the least in Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Notebook. Meanwhile, established equivalent is the most used techniques and both particularization and pure borrowing are the least to translate those romantic expressions
