Abstract

This study examines thermoelectrics to cool the flowing coolant inside a water block. There were two identical thermoelectrics with a type of TEC2-25408 and dimension of 40 mm x 40 mm x 3.74 mm. The cold side of the thermoelectric was affixed to the top surface of water block, while the hot side of the thermoelectric was attached to the heat pipe. The mass flow rates of the coolant were varied, i.e. 1 g/s, 1.5 g/s, and 2 g/s. All temperatures were measured using calibrated K-type thermocouples with an uncertainty of ± 0.5°C. The experiment was observed for about 5 hours. All data were recorded using the data logger DAQ MX 9714 NI that was connected to the PV with LabView program. The results show that at the coolant mass flow rate of 1 g/s and the ambient temperature of 30.57°C, the cold side and hot side temperatures are 21.83°C and 51.41°C, the inlet and outlet water block temperatures are 31.01°C and 27.01°C. The COPs of the thermoelectric and system are 0.183 and 0.138. While at the coolant mass flow rate of 1.5 g/s and the ambient temperature of 30.81°C, the cold side and the hot side temperatures of the thermoelectric are 23.32°C and 50.83°C, the inlet and outlet water block temperatures are 31.61°C and 28.4°C. While the COPs of thermoelectric and system are 0.212 and 0.159. Then at the coolant mass flow rate of 2 g/s and the ambient temperature of 30.84°C, the cold side and hot side temperatures of the thermoelectric are 23.32°C and 50.83°C, the inlet and outlet water block temperatures are 30.94°C and 28.37°C. While the COPs of the thermoelectric and system are 0.215 and 0.162. Hence, increasing the mass flow rate of the coolant elevates the outlet temperature of the water block and increases the COPs of the thermoelectric and system.
