Abstract

This study explores the challenges and opportunities that English teachers face in enacting Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The research employs qualitative methods to gain in-depth insights into the complexities of HOTS enactment in a private school setting. The study reveals that while most teachers demonstrate a good familiarity of HOTS notion and its importance in fostering critical thinking abilities, there is a need for continuous professional development. Lack of awareness of HOTS levels among most teachers emphasizes the necessity of specialized training programs. Challenges identified include diverse student abilities, complex lesson planning, and inadequate training for teachers. On the other hand, the study identifies several opportunities for English teachers in private schools to effectively enact HOTS. These opportunities include motivation for professional development, collaborative learning environments, openness to feedback on teaching, and the presence of teachers graduated from educational major. Recommendations are provided for teachers, schools, policymakers, and future researchers. Teachers are encouraged to prioritize collaboration, continuous professional development, and student-centered instruction to better HOTS enactment.
