Abstract

vii ABSTRACT Chemistry practicums cannot be separated from glassware, special instruments, and several chemical materials which are quite expensive and relatively dangerous, such as the practicum for making picric acid. The practicum consists of pouring, stirring, heating, and filtering dangerous substances which could be simulated in a virtual world. Various innovations have been made for chemistry practicums such as virtual laboratories, and several studies have utilized 3D virtual reality to provide a more realistic model of the practicums. Studies have also utilized Leap Motion technology in their simulations so users can interact directly with the virtual world using hand gestures to practice their skills. However, from these studies, no innovation has been carried out to reduce the costs and dangers of practicum for making picric acid. Based on these problems, the authors designed and built a 3D virtual reality simulation application of chemistry practicum for making picric acid using Leap Motion. The simulation was tested by 16 users with backgrounds in chemistry, informatics, and those who were unfamiliar with either. The test cases show that the features work as they should, while the System Usability Scale questionnaire returns a score of 63,125, categorized as “Marginally Acceptable”. A questionnaire to validate the accuracy of the practicum aimed at users from chemistry backgrounds returns a validation score of 85. This simulation can cut the costs of at least IDR 658,638.00 per session and eliminate the risk of picric acid practicum.
