Abstract

The thesis is entitled "Expressive Act in Dead Poets Society Movie: A Pragmatic Study." The aim of this research is to identify and describe the types of expressive acts used in Dead Poets Society movie and to identify and describe the strategies of expressive acts used in Dead Poets Society movie. This research is using the theory of expressive speech act from Norrick (1978) and the theory of strategies of performing speech act from Akmajian (1995). The research methods used is a descriptive qualitative. The data used consists of primary sources, the first is primary data taken from the Dead Poets Society movie, including dialogue, sentences, words, phrases, script and scenes. Secondary sources such as books, journals and websites are also used. The research findings show that the analysis identified 9 types of expressive acts employed by the characters, with lamenting (16 instances) being the most frequent, reflecting the film's theme of sadness and grief. Deploring (14 instances) and thanking and boasting (12 instances each) further illustrates the emotional landscape and character interactions. Notably, forgiving was absent, reflecting a lack of emphasis on reconciliation. Four strategies of performing these expressive acts were also examined. Literal speech acts dominate (66 instances), showcasing straightforward communication, while non-literal acts (12 instances) add nuance. Notably, direct and indirect speech acts were absent, likely due to the film's focus on individualism, selfexpression, and clear communication within the formal educational setting. This absence aligns with the narrative's emphasis on personal journeys and self-discovery. In conclusion, this study reveals the diverse range of expressive acts and communication strategies employed in "Dead Poets Society," offering insights into the characters' emotions, interactions, and the film's thematic elements.
