Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the fraction effect of bamboo fiber volume to tensile strength, shear strength and water absorption on sandwich composite material contained bamboo opened cell foam and matrixed polyurethane. In this research, bamboo is used as material for core of sandwich composite. Polyurethane is used as a matrix of bamboo fiber and plywood as the skin. The fraction of fiber volume to make the core is 2%, 4%, and 6% with a fiber length of 10 mm. To find out the effect of tensile strength and shear strength used ASTM C 297 and ASTM C 273 as a testing standard, while for the water absorption testing used ASTM C 272 as the testing standard. Based on research that has been done about the fraction effect of bamboo fiber volume to tensile strength, shear strength, and water absorption on bamboo opened cell foam and matrixed polyurethane sandwich composite material showed that is more increased fraction effect of bamboo volume as used, the tensile strength and shear strength are decreased, while on the water absorption getting weight increase. The lowest tensile strength occurred in the fraction of 6% bamboo fiber volume of 0.07 MPa and the lowest shear strength occurred in the fraction of 6% bamboo fiber volume of 0.062 MPa. While the water absorption getting weight increase 134%.
