Abstract

Inrecentyears the numbers of motor vehicle usage has increased quite significantly. This can have a negative impact on the environment that causes the increased of air pollution. One of the efforts made to reduce air pollution in this research is by adding coconut shell activated charcoal as an adsorbent installed on the exhaust gas channel. This study aims to determine the effect of the use of coconut shell activated charcoal as an adsorbent and to know the effect of oxygen addition adsorbent from activated char in reducing vehicle exhaust emissions. The method used in this research is to model the absorption unit of exhaust gas emission in the form of adsorbent from coconut shell activated charcoal with three variations of oxygen flow rate about 1 liter/min, 2 liter/minute and 4 liter/minute with 100 mm adsorbent length. The adsorbent unit then mounted on a modified exhaust. Then tested on motor vehicle 4 step gasoline- fueled"Supra X 100 cc" in condition N (neutral) with engine speed 1400 rpm ± 100 rpm. From the test results showed that the influence of the use of coconut shell activated as an adsorbent in reducing the concentration of exhaust emissions. This is shown from the CO, CO2 and HC emissions as a whole decreased the concentration. The biggest decrease presentation occurredt of 4 liters/minute of oxygen converter. The decrease was 63.5% CO, 57.36% CO2 and 65.3% HC.
