Abstract
Sumbawa’s folk songs are local and autonomous, that cannot be separated from the beauty of the literary work. As the result of the literary work, it is represents the expression of the author or the creator of the environment which can be seen and felt. The songs consist of several lyrics of the texts, which in essence is poetry. To be able to understand the lyrics of the song as a poem, the audience or listener need to pay more attention on one of the building blocks of poetry which are metaphorical or figurative language. Metaphors in Sumbawa’s folk song’s lyric could be identified by its signifiers, function, and implication; that is will be the main problems in this research. The purpose of this research is to expose the signifier, function, and implication of metaphors used in Sumbawa’s folk songs lyric. The method used in this research is eclectic method, which has the combination of semiotics, and pragmatics. The data of this research were collective from one hundred of Sumbawa’s folk songs lyrics, which choose randomly by singers in solo or a group. The technique used in collecting the data are reading, listening, and recording techniques.
