Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Students’ Strategies to Increase Reading Achievement: A Case Study At Grade XI of SMAN 7 Mataram in Academic Year 2016/2017”. The study is aimed at finding out the students‟ strategy to increase their reading achievement. Natural science department were the population of study was 493 students, and the sample was 40 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. 40 students of IPA 4 Class was Choosen purposively as the sample of the research. To collect the data, the writer used two kinds of technique: reading test, and questionnaire. The participants were examined through Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire 7.0 versions as the measurement instrument to check the learning strategy preference. The data were processed and analyzed through Likert Scale and Index Formula for percentage (%) to get the most and the least strategy used by the students. The result of questionnaire show the most strategy used, were memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social, respectively. For the most frequently used strategies by the students of the eleven grade students was metacognitive strategy (37,55%) and cognitive strategy (32,5%). In term of motivation the students have strong motivation in learning English. The thing that distinguished the way the students used the strategy was in the time they began to learn English.
