Abstract

This study, which looked at the language acquisition device (LAD) among 0-4 year old children in the Village of Terara, aimed at presenting an overview of the children language acquisition within the aspects of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, and its relevance with the Indonesian learning at the preschool level. This study, which was based on psycholinguistics theories, i.e. language acquisition theory, behaviorism theory (Skinner), and nativism theory (Chomsky), and cognitive theory (Bloom), was conducted through the collection method using observation technique and unstructured observation. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Village of Terara. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman model of descriptive qualitative method. Based on the analysis, the following findings were obtained: (1) From the phonological acquisition, the 0-4 year old children had not been able to pronounce voiced consonant of AA [r]; instead, they pronounced it with lateral consonant of AA [l]; (2). From the morphological acquisition, they had been able to utter nouns, adjectives, verbs, numbers, question words, and use affixation; (3). From the syntactical acquisition, they had been able to produce negative sentence, passiv voice, interrogatives, and affirmatives/statements; (4). From the semantic acquisition, their word production had indicated lexical meaning and certain grammatical meaning; and, (5). The relevance of the language acquisition among 0-4 year old children had a close relationship with the Indonesian learning at the preschool level, as the general function of preschool was to develop the communication skill and socialization skill, and to prepare children for the next level of schooling.
