Abstract

This thesis is aimed to identify and describe the kind of maxims which are flouted by the actors in ‘Forrest Gump’ movie, the implicature of the flouted maxims, and its implication to the translation qualities. This thesis use the script of ‘Forrest Gump’ movie containing the dialogues as the source of the data and it was being analyzes used qualitative descriptive method. Thus, the data were described in the form of word, phrases, and sentences. There are 3 results of this research. The first result is that there are 3 categories of the flouted maxims. The first category is flouted clash between maxims found in 13 data. The flouted clash between maxims is divided into 5 sub-categories. The first is the flouted maxims of quality, quantity and manner, the second is the flouted maxims of quantity, manner and relevance, The third is the flouted maxims of quality and quantity, the fourth is the flouted maxims of quantity and manner, and the fifth is the flouted maxim of quantity and rlevance. The second category is the flouted maxim of quantity found in 7 data. The third category is the flouted maxim of quality which is found in 1 data. The second result is from the 21 data analyzed, it is found that all the implicatures are conversational implicature. Then, the third result is the translation quality which can be judged in three aspects. The first aspect is accuracy which shows that there are 19 data belong to accurate translation, and 2 data are categorized into less accurate translation. The second aspect is acceptability which shows that there are 14 data categorized into acceptable translation, 4 data are categorized into less acceptable translation, and 3 data are categorized into unacceptable. The third aspect is readability which shows that there are 16 data which are categorized into readable translation, and 5 data which are categorized into less readable translation. Key words:
