Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether or not there was an effect of using Mind mapping technique on students’ writing skill. It was conducted at seventh grade of SMAN 2 Mataram in academic year 2016/2017. The population was 507 students. The samples were class XI IPA 4 consisted of 40 students as the experimental group and class XI IPA 5 consisted of 41 students as the control group which was chosen by using random sampling technique. The data were gained by using testing instrument which was divided into three procedures of data collection; pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Pre-test was given to both groups to know students’ background knowledge towards the concerned topic. The mean scores of pre-test were 45.833 for experimental group and 36.333 for the control group. In the treatment section, the experimental group was treated by applying Mind mapping technique while the control group was taught by using conventional teaching technique. Finally, post-test was conducted in both groups to know whether or not there was a positive effect in students’ writing skill with the result of average scores 73.83 in experimental group and 51.5 in control group. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test formula for the numerical data and identification. Research result showed that the t-test score was 3.4127. It was higher than the value of t-table in the degree of freedom 58 at the confidence level 0.05 (95%) and 0.01 (99%). Consequently, the Null hypothesis (Ho) was successfully rejected, and as the conclusion Mind mapping technique was effective to be used in improving students’ writing skill at eleventh grade of SMAN 2 Mataram.
