Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the main difficulties faced by students and the factors causing students‟ difficulties in writing recount text. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Labuapi academic year 2016/2017. The researcher drew 24 out of 193 students as the sample selected using purposive sampling. The data of this study were gained through students‟ writing product and questionnaires and were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. It shows that more than 50% of students‟ product was categorized into poor and unacceptable in terms of their writing competences. While the grammatical features analysis result found that dominant difficulties faced was in using past tense about 43,00%, followed by spelling about 23,83%, next difficulties in using preposition about 12,43. Thus, the difficulties in writing recount text might be caused by some factors such as students‟ weaknesses in memorizing vocabulary, organizing ideas, understanding the material explained, and the main factor is that students have too little practice
