Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Use of Intrasentential Codeswithing in Kaskus Thread” and was aimed to analyze the English elements that being switched and the reason for using codeswitching in internet forum, Kaskus. This study uses theory of Charlotte Hoffman for the reason for using codeswitching. Technique of data collecting is analyzing the threads in Kaskus. The data then identified to know th English elements that is used by the author of the thread in Kaskus and to find the reason of the authors for using codeswitching in their thread. The data is collected from January to March 2017. The result of this study showed that from 124 utterances there are 168 English elements that is used; that is consist of 162 words (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, determiner, conjunction, and preposition) and 6 phrases (noun phrase and verb phrase). From the data analysis, Nouns are the most frequently switched elements 113 (67.2%), followed by adjectives 23 (13.7%), verbs 21 (12.5%). Whereas the result of the reason for using codeswitching showed that there are 7 reasons for the author of Kaskus use codeswitching that are talking about particular topic (6), quoting somebody else (1), being emphatic about something/ express solidarity (5), interjection (3), repetition (3), intention of clarifying the speech of content (2), expressing group identity (6).
