Abstract

Background: Dysentery is one of the gastrointestinal disease which become public health problems. It causes high mortality and morbidity especially for children and toddlers. Dysentery usually caused by Shigelladysenteriaebacteria. Clove (Syzygiumaromaticum) is one of the traditional medicine for eradicating Shigelladysenteriae. This study aim to determine antibacterial activity of clove (Syzygiumaromaticum) essential oil extract on Shigella dysenteriaegrowth. Methods:This study was experimental research using post-test only control group design. The study consist of 5 groups, 3 treatment groups and 2 control groups. One control groups was given aquades as a negative control, the other was given gentamisin as positive control. The treatment groups were given clove (Syzygiumaromaticum) essential oil extract with different doses (1.25 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml, 5 mg/ml).Kirby Bauer well diffusion method was used to measure antibacterial activity.
