Abstract

This thesis aimed at considering how to reveal the theme of the novel by analyzing the characters and plot. The writing of this thesis is based on The Testament which is written by John Grisham. In order to explain all of aspects which interrelated such as theme, characters, characterization and plot. All of them are discussed with objective criticism approaches, in which the researcher presented the data by taking the relevant quotation from the novel. The data were then analyzed to observe the characters, characterization and plot. The result of the study indicated that the three main characters (Troy Phelan, Nate O’Riley, and Rachel Lane) have roles to reveal the theme of the author wants to tell. Troy Phelan, the richest but desperate man in the U.S.A. He feels lonely because his family does not love him. Nate O’Riley, a successful lawyer in the past that become messy in his life because of alcohol and drugs. He starts neglected his family. Rachel Lane, a missionary serve her life to God. She is not interested in money although she is a heiress for all Phelan’s wealth. The analysis of the quotation presented here shows that all of the events that the three main characters faced in the story reveal the theme of the novel. By analyzing the plot and characterization of the main characters, the writer found that the theme is “wealth does not always give happiness.”
