Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of the Intrinsic Elements of The Artist of the Beautiful a Short Story by Nathahiel Hawthorne” aims to find out the intrinsic elements of Nathaniel Hawthorne short story. The data of this thesis were gathered through documentary method and library study. Furthermore, a descriptive qualitative is used to analyze the data. Each intrinsic element is interrelated to each other, such as Plot is built by the series of events. The theme can be determined by those series of events. Owen Warland is the main character becoming central idea. The characterization is close-related to the plot. Characters also influence the setting. The behavior and action of the characters are the forms of setting. Point of view was based on the author experiences that isolated him from the society and revolt in searching the truth. In terms of style this short story, uses figurative language such as personification and metaphor. The atmosphere f the story contains of sadness and disappointment. The complication occurs when Peter Hovenden wants to touch the toys (butterflies). Those butterflies became serious problems and the climax of conflicts between Peter Hovenden, the member of society and Owen Warland. They saw Owen himself is just a watchmaker and not a true artist. Finally, falling action happened when they found hesitation of an artwork that became a symbol of enjoyment of the artist soul.
