Abstract

the nature of imperatives in Sasak Meno-Mene dialect. It aims at finding out the three major aspects; (1) the forms of imperatives in Mujur village, (2) the This study analyzes types of imperatives in Mujur village, and (3) to know the strategies used by the community members in indicating politeness of imperatives in Mujur village. The data found were descriptively analyzed. The population of this study was the community members of Sasak Meno-Mene dialect in Mujur village whose speech contained imperatives in their daily conversation. The data were gathered through observation and note taking. The data indicated that, firstly the forms of imperative in Mujur village consisted of three forms; direct imperatives, indirect imperatives, and negation of imperatives. Secondly, the types of imperative consisted of two types; jamaq and alus imperatives. Finally, the strategies in indicating politeness of imperative were; (1) the employment of imperative markers, either in jamaq or alus in uttering command, (2) longer expressions uttered are also considered as good ways in commanding other(s) in order to soften the command, (3) the employment of indirect imperatives since the more indirect of the commands, the more polite they are considered, (4) the employment of proper address forms, and (5) the employment of alus word(s) when the case is people with Islamic religious title command or to be commanded by commoners, educated people and those with the same status.
